What is being proposed for Abbeville Street Park and why?

We’re proposing upgrades to the playground, picnic areas, pathways, informal sport and supporting facilities to make the park more comfortable, accessible and enjoyable for everyday use. We’ve listened to the community and propose an amenities block to support the community in enjoying the park for longer.

These improvements respond directly to what we heard from the community, especially the importance of keeping Abbeville Street Park leafy, welcoming and suited to relaxed, informal recreation.

What improvements are planned for the playground and park facilities?

We're planning an upgraded playground with new play equipment and a focus on nature play elements.

What other facilities are being considered in the park?

We're exploring some additional informal recreation opportunities, such as a multi-use sport court and fitness station. These are intended to complement how the park is already used, rather than introduce large or high-intensity facilities.

How will we maintain the park's relaxed, community feel?

We're focusing on creating comfortable, flexible spaces - like shaded seating, informal play areas and open grass - so the park continues to feel welcoming and easy to use for everyday activities like catching up with friends or spending time with family.

What will happen to the old Scout Hut?

The Scout Hut is no longer in use and the lease has been relinquished. We are investigating options for either its future reuse or potential removal.

Will the Community Garden be affected by the upgrades?

The Community Garden will not be affected by the upgrades.

What site constraints have influenced the design of the draft concept plan?

We're working with a number of site constraints, including mature trees, poor drainage, existing infrastructure and overland flow areas, and parts of the park that flood during heavy rain. These factors guide where we can safely and sustainably locate new features.

Why aren't more features included in the draft concept plan?

While we heard lots of great ideas from the community, we need to balance these with environmental conditions, available space, and budget. We've focused on improvements that will have the biggest benefit for everyday use while respecting these constraints.

How are different park users being considered?

We know the park is used in lots of different ways - from play and exercise to relaxing and socialising. The concept provides a mix of flexible, informal spaces so different groups can comfortably share the park.

Why does the draft concept plan locate the toilet block in its proposed location?

The location of the toilet block has been selected to keep it out of the overland flow path, to allow convenient access to and from the playground and multi-use sports area and to allow passive surveillance from different locations for security.

How will access and accessibility be improved?

We're proposing improving pathways, accessible amenities and inclusive playground elements to make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to move through and enjoy the park, while also strengthening connections to surrounding streets and facilities.

Will the toilets be closed (locked) at night?

Yes, toilets will be open during daylight hours and closed at night.

    When will the upgrades happen?

Now that the draft concept plan has been prepared, we are inviting community feedback. Further design, planning, investigations and delivery of the upgrades will progress as funding becomes available.
