Why is Council focusing on this section of Annerley Road?

Annerley Road between Peter Doherty Street and Ipswich Road is part primary cycle route and part secondary route and is an important active travel connection to other key links such as Fairfield Road, Ipswich Road, Kangaroo Point bridge, Eleanor Schonell Bridge, Yamma Bridge and the Goodwill Bridge Road.

Council recognises the important role this corridor is already playing in moving residents and visitors through the area and is investigating opportunities to improve safety and amenity through the provision of a high-quality active transport connection.

An upgrade to the active travel infrastructure will make it easier for people to travel between different areas, improving access to key destinations like Kangaroo Point, Woolloongabba, South Brisbane, and the city, as well as schools, local businesses and other facilities.

It will provide a safe, efficient, and sustainable way for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to choose active transport as part of a healthy and active lifestyle.

How could this project benefit me?

Providing a safe, formalised, active transport facility along a route with high demand will benefit travellers in all transport modes. Separation between pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooters, and vehicles gives every member of the community the option to safely travel in the transport mode that best suits them.

For residents and businesses, sustainable transport options can boost foot traffic and improve amenity with a more pleasant streetscape.

Whether you're walking to the local coffee shop, dropping your children to school or cycling to work - this active transport connection will make your travel safer and easier.

What about active travel on surrounding streets or other active transport routes?

We know people need or want to travel along a wide variety of routes and in different transport modes.

This project is focused on investigating active travel improvements along Annerley Road between Peter Doherty Road and Ipswich Road, given its popular existing function in the road and active transport network.

Requests for investigation of active transport infrastructure on other routes will be recorded for future consideration.

    Why is my feedback important?

We want to understand the views and needs of the community who visit, live in and travel through this area, including where you see opportunities to improve safety, amenity and active travel on Annerley Road, between Peter Doherty Road and Ipswich Road.

This is part of a grant-funded process to investigate potential concept options to improve the active transport connections for residents, visitors and commuters.

Feedback will be considered alongside technical inputs and Council's design practices to help inform future project designs.

What are the next steps after the feedback surveys have closed?

Once the feedback period ends, community feedback will be considered alongside technical inputs to help inform potential concept design options. Design investigations are expected to be underway until early 2026. We will keep the community updated and share more information about the project as it progresses.

This options investigations process is an early project phase and any further stages of project development will be subject to future funding allocation.

    What is the construction timeline?

This phase of the project is focused on investigations and the development of potential concept design options to improve active travel along Annerley Road between Peter Doherty Road and Ipswich Road.

Any further stages of project development are subject to future funding allocations. No future stages of the project have been funded currently.

    How is the project funded?

The Annerley Road Active Travel investigations project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program.
