Where will the park be located?

    The park will be a triangular park situated between Lancaster Road, Kitchener Road and McGill Avenue at Ascot. It is located south-west of Ascot train station and the Eagle Farm racecourse.

    What is the project about?

    Brisbane City Council is planning to create a district park for the suburb of Ascot. The project aims to create a park that celebrates the history of the site and surrounding suburb by introducing historic elements such as a rotunda, white post and rail fencing and hedging around the perimeter. 

    Council is seeking community input on the draft park concept plan to help create a park that will be enjoyed by the whole community. Residents and businesses are encouraged to give feedback in person and online from Tuesday 8 May to Sunday 3 June 2018 before designs are finalised. 

    What is the purpose of the project?

    Brisbane City Council is committed to keeping Brisbane clean and green, making our city liveable and sustainable for future generations. As part of this vision, Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed draft concept plan of a new district park for the historically-rich suburb of Ascot and its diverse community.

    The purpose of this project is to create a park which resonates with the community and celebrates the history of the site and surrounding suburb.

    The project will deliver park a park that:

    • promotes a strong sense of community and celebrates the area’s heritage
    • increases accessible green space in the area
    • includes a new fenced playground for children to enjoy
    • celebrates our subtropical lifestyle with new subtropical plantings and the rejuvenation of existing trees.

    What motivated this project to commence?

    The project is a Lord Mayor deliverable. From 2009 to 2011, Brisbane City Council worked with the local community to plan for the future of the Racecourse Precinct. One of the key outcomes of the Racecourse Precinct Neighbourhood Plan was that the former Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) members’ car park, at the corner of Lancaster and Kitchener Roads, will be converted back to public parkland.

    What will the proposed design include?

    The aim is to create a simple and attractive park which resonates with the community and celebrates the history of the site and surrounding suburb. 

    The community can use the park for a range of recreational opportunities, including walking, picnicking, and small concerts held in the proposed band stand.

    The design will help enhance the prominence of the park and is proposed to include:

    • open grassed areas
    • shade planting
    • informal seating and picnic spaces
    • a rotunda
    • strong pedestrian links
    • a new fully fenced playground for children to enjoy.

    A off-leash dog park will also be provided adjacent to the main park. 

    Council proposes two unique features to help establish the individual character of the playground, these include:

    • babbling brook, which will provide an opportunity for children to be involved in water play, controlling the flow and direction of water along a rocky natural creek setting
    • a concrete patterned maze which will provide an opportunity for children to learn about important local figures and historical events that have occurred in the local area.

    When will the improvements be made?

    Construction of the park is planned to commence in 2019, following completion of final design and awarding of the project for construction. This will involve decompaction and regeneration of the soil, followed by park embellishment works.

    Initial preparation works are currently underway and are anticipated to be completed mid-2018, weather permitting. 

    Works will include:

    • removing old park furniture, internal fencing and mulch/debris pile
    • following arborist investigations, diseased and/or dead trees will be removed
    • trimming under tree canopies, for safety purposes
    • de-compacting soil around remaining trees and adding mulch to promote improved tree health
    • filling gullies, washouts and divots with road base to temporarily improve site safety
    • relocating the traffic control box to make room for a future park entry way
    • removing boundary fencing in disrepair and installing bollards and or railings.

    Works will take place between 7am-5pm, Monday to Saturday. Residents in close proximity to the site may experience an increase in noise and dust.

    Will the project affect any leased properties on the site?

    There are two leased premises, the C&K Ascot Community Kindergarten (93 Kitchener Road) and the Kitchener Road Children’s Centre (77 Kitchener Road). The historic 1920s fire station also remains a proposed community tenancy site. The project will not impact on existing leased sites and Council is committed to providing long-term surety for existing tenants.

    How can the community give feedback?

    The community online survey will be open until Sunday 3 June 2018.  There will also be information kiosks during this time.

    Community feedback will help shape the final design, and help to create a park that will be enjoyed by the whole community. 

    What are the next steps once feedback has been gathered?

    Council will collate the feedback and share the final park design with the community in late 2018. Construction of the park is planned for 2019.
