Save Money Save Food Challenge
Food waste is a monumental challenge that affects everyone in the food value chain – farm to fork. And it’s not only an environmental waste issue that we are trying to tackle, it’s a big financial one. Food waste costs the average Australian household $43 per week - that's around 1 in 3 bags of groceries we buy is wasted. At 32%, households account for the largest food waste volumes across the whole food supply chain – more than the farm or retail.
To support Brisbane residents to reduce food waste and save money, we have recently launched Save Money Save Food challenge. It’s a free, three-week text program where participants receive timely tips, videos, and recipes via text messages. A few key points:
- It’s really easy to join: text the word 'food' to 0481 889 889 and you will start your journey to save more money today.
- Plan. Prepare. Store: are the three core behaviours that shape this challenge, and Brisbane’s top three most wasted foods: 1. meat, 2. salad greens, 3. bread.
- Free food saver pack: participants have a chance to win a food saver pack, which includes: silicon food covers, food waste prevention cookbook, OzHarvest Use It Up Tape, and Grow It Local seeds. [View here]
