Consultation has concluded

Community consultation for the Colmslie Cove playground artwork closed on 4 October 2021. Thank you to everyone who voted for their favourite concept design. 

Colmslie Beach Reserve's 'Colmslie Cove' playground is getting an upgrade!

The underwater world of Colmslie Cove will soon be joined by new friends and fantastical contraptions.

During September-October 2021, Council invited you to vote for your favourite concept for new play sculptures to be installed at Colmslie Cove.

Following community feedback on the preferred concept design for the playground, Council has selected local artist David White's concept design, Colmslie Cove 2.0

Council expects to complete the playground upgrades in 2022-23.

    Over 100 years ago ancient river-mud creatures emerged from tunnels to the ocean. These mysterious and varied beings each have special magical powers. Humans discovered how to borrow their magic and explore their kingdom through the portals within Colmslie Cove.

    Explore the portals to discover hidden codes, solve water puzzles and activate the machines. Use the portals to be transported to an underwater kingdom. Use your new magical powers and explore the fantastical creatures who inhabit this world.

    Artwork name: Taba Naba Norem

    Taba Naba Norem, a well-known children’s song and sit-down dance, is a Meriam Mer phrase meaning “Come on let’s go to the reef”. Malu, the sea and marine creatures surrounding the islands come to life in the bright coloured creatures with dots, stripes, and the Torres Strait minaral patterning.

    Meet creatures like the great Matu (Whale), ride on its back and play the bells and chimes. Discover the secrets of the Dhamu Kodal (Seahorse), the Dhuuma (Prawn), and all the other creatures of the reef.

    Merperson sculpture - become a merperson by stepping into the tail.Artist name: Simone Eisler
    Artwork name: The Return of the Brisbane River Cod and its Fantastical Friends

    The wondrous song of a Merperson calls the extinct Brisbane River Cod and their fantastical friends back to Colmslie Cove. Become the Merperson by stepping into their tail ornamented with starfish and shells. Climb onto the backs of the Cod, with great metallic helmets and armour, and go on an adventure.

    Along the way meet the fantastical friends, creatures who rise from the sand coloured surface, and the Greedy Mudcrab, a large metallic crab who guards the treasures hidden around the mud pit. Discover treasures like the giant mirrored pearls along the creek bed.

    At Colmslie Cove, Goldie the fish and Fingers the octopus are joined by new friends. Explore the Cove with Snorkels the submarine, and its interactive control panels. Meet Pinchy the Crab, who hangs out at the mud pit, squirting the mud with water to keep it muddy!

    Then wash down under the tentacle shower. Explore the Splish Splash puddle tables and get squirted by the fish. Play in Sandy Castles and make your own sand castle!
