Dornoch Terrace safety improvements project

Brisbane City Council is pleased to release a concept design for the Dornoch Terrace safety improvements project between Gladstone Road, Highgate Hill and Hardgrave Road, West End.

This project is part of Council’s plan to get residents home quicker and safer by enhancing active transport options and increasing safety across Brisbane’s local road network.

Dornoch Terrace is a busy district road and is an important cycling route. Over the past five years, Dornoch Terrace has been identified as an area with a high rate of crashes, with 33 recorded accidents, 27 of which involved cyclists.

The project aims to create a safer environment for all road users by:

  • providing safe and continuous cycle facilities
  • reducing the speed of cyclists and vehicles
  • addressing safety concerns caused by vehicles turning
  • providing a signalised intersection at Hampstead Road and Dornoch Terrace
  • improving pedestrian crossing points.

  • Reduced-speed shared space

A shared space is proposed for cyclists and motorists at the intersection of Dornoch Terrace, Ganges Street and Hardgrave Road, featuring:
    • reduced speed limit of 30 km/hr
    • an extended raised speed platform
    • shared space on the road for motorists and cyclists (rather than dedicated lanes).
Creating a shared space will slow down traffic and enhance amenity of the precinct. It also means the majority of existing on-road car parking will be retained at this location.

Two new zebra crossings are proposed in this shared space to improve pedestrian safety.
    1. Across Ganges Street near Dornoch Terrace

One car parking space is proposed to be removed on Hardgrave Road. This is to maintain visibility for cyclists and motorists traveling around the bend and to improve safety for the proposed Hardgrave Road zebra crossing.
  • Signalised intersection at Hampstead Road and Dornoch Terrace

Council proposes to signalise the intersection of Hampstead Road and Dornoch Terrace. This includes installing traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at the intersection.

    Signalising the intersection will:
    • improve safety and connectivity for pedestrians
    • improve safety for all road users by enabling safer turning movements.
    Potential impacts:

Council has identified eight informal car parking spaces and one tree that would require removal to facilitate the signalised intersection at Hampstead Road and Dornoch Terrace.

  • Slip lane at Gladstone Road

As part of the concept design, Council is proposing to improve the Gladstone Road slip lane onto Dornoch Terrace. This includes:
    • improving the cycling connection from the Gladstone Road bike lanes to the slip lane facility
    • a new bike lane from Gladstone Road directly onto Dornoch Terrace.
    Potential impacts:

One tree has been identified for removal on Dornoch Terrace to facilitate the proposed changes at Gladstone Road. All existing parking in the Gladstone Road slip lane will be retained.
