About the catchment
- Upper catchment
In the upper catchment, the waterway has a more natural shape, with bends, native vegetation and habitat for wildlife. - Middle catchment
In the middle catchment, the Brook transitions to sections with modified channels and embankments. These areas are generally more urbanised and include a greater concentration of paths, parks and community facilities. - Lower catchment
In the lower catchment, the waterway becomes Schulz Canal, which has been shaped to help more floodwater through the area and out to Moreton Bay after passing under the Gateway Motorway, the canal becomes a wide, walled waterway that flows through coastal wetlands before reaching the bay.
What is a catchment and how do they work?
A catchment is an area of land where water is collected by the natural features such as hills or mountains. Gravity causes rain and other water in the catchment to run downhill and flow to a common low point, such as a creek, lake, river, bay and eventually the ocean.
The combined catchment area of the creeks and rivers flowing into Moreton Bay is 21,220 square kilometres.
Brisbane has 38 major creek catchments and 630 kilometres of waterways.
What is the area that covers the Kedron Brook catchment?
Kedron Brook catchment comprises over 110-square-kilometres of land in the northern Brisbane suburbs of Ferny Grove, Mitchelton, Everton Park, Keperra, Enoggera, Stafford, Lutwyche, Kedron, Wooloowin, Clayfield, Nundah, Northgate, Toombul, Banyo, Nudgee and Nudgee Beach. Smaller creeks that flow into the Brook along the way include Cedar Creek, Sandy Creek, and Cannery Creek.
What we know about the Kedron Brook catchment
Kedron Brook is one of Brisbane's major creek catchments. Stretching from the D'Aguilar Range to Moreton Bay, the 29-kilometre waterway passes through 14 suburbs and connects more than 30 parks, reserves and sporting fields. Covering more than 110 square kilometres, the catchment includes a mix of natural areas, parks, residential neighbourhoods, commercial areas and industrial land, making it an important environmental, recreation and community asset for Brisbane's north.

About the Vision
What is the intent of the 20-year draft vision?
The draft 20-year vision sets out the intent for the Brook to be a leading lifestyle and recreation corridor with a healthier, more resilient waterway.
As part of the draft vision, we are exploring ways to make the Brook easier and more enjoyable to move through, with better pathways for walking, running and cycling, and more opportunities to relax, unwind and connect with nature along the corridor.
Once finalised later in 2026, the Kedron Brook Vision will guide future planning and investment within the Kedron Brook catchment.
When was initial community engagement undertaken for this project?
Community engagement Stage 1 was undertaken from April - June 2025.
In this second stage of engagement from Tuesday 11 August to Sunday 6 September, we want to hear from residents again about the work we’ve done so far before we finalise the Vision.
How to get involved and related projects
How can I get involved in volunteering with local community groups who care for Kedron Brook?
There are several bush and creek care groups in the area who are actively involved in invasive weed removal, native plant revegetation and building wildlife sanctuaries to protect local biodiversity. Search brisbane.qld.gov.au for ‘Habitat Brisbane, ‘bushcare volunteer groups’ or visit Kedron Brook Catchment Branch to find out how you can get involved.
What is the Kedron Brook Riverine Recovery project?
Healthy Land and Water are delivering the Kedron Brook Riverine Recovery project at three areas on the stretch of the Brook flowing west to east between Dawson Parade and Osborne Road, through Keperra, Mitchelton, Everton Hills, Everton Park and Arana Hills.
All works are confined to the creek channel and immediately adjacent riparian areas. No works will take place on private property.
Healthy Land and Water was engaged to deliver this project, which is funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. This project aligns with the intent of the Kedron Brook Revitalisation project.
There is vegetation in the local waterway, Kedron Brook, is this contributing to flooding, particularly post the February 2022 event?
We understand that residents want to know how vegetation in Kedron Brook is managed and what this means for future flooding.
Research shows that vegetation along waterways has minimal or no impact on flood levels, but it helps to stabilise creek banks, reduce erosion, support wildlife, and protect water quality.
We manage vegetation in Brisbane waterways using best-practice environmental and engineering principles. This includes regular inspections and maintenance at key locations such as bridges and culverts, where vegetation or debris may affect water flow.
