About Village Precinct Projects
November 2021
Council funds a Village Precinct Project to deliver improvements to a precinct's attractiveness, safety, accessibility and/or identity. These elements improve the commercial vitality of the precinct by creating:
- a beautiful precinct - high-quality, attractive public spaces that are accessible, safe and comfortable to walk through; spaces that encourage the local community to meet, linger and enjoy
- a precinct for people - streets that are inclusive and inviting places for everyone to shop, socialise and relax
- a sense of place - reinforcing the local character and pride, and creating distinctive subtropical spaces for local residents, businesses and visitors to connect with and belong to.
Expected improvements may include some of the following:
Street furniture
A uniform suite of furniture improves a centre's functionality and comfort. The standard suite includes new seats, bins, bike racks, drinking fountains and balustrades, where required. Unique street furniture is also delivered where appropriate.
Street trees and gardens
Planting street trees and garden beds provides shade and creates a 'green' buffer between pedestrians and vehicle traffic. Planting creates a colourful and pleasant setting for outdoor dining and an inviting place to meet, shop and socialise.
Creative outcomes
Creative outcomes enhance character and identity and create a focal point for the community.
Activation events
Tailored activation events enhance the sense of place and ownership and may encourage local economic development by attracting the community and visitors to the precinct.
Minor civil works
Where required, new pedestrian medians, kerb ramps, tactile ground surface indicators and the realignment of kerbs can improve centre accessibility and safety.
