North west transport network - Community consultation
Consultation has concluded
Consultation on the north west transport network business case has closed. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.
Council is reviewing your feedback to help inform the scope of transport solutions for inclusion in the business case. A report summarising community feedback received during consultation will be released by early 2022.
For the latest updates on this project, visit North West Transport Network on Council's website.
The Australian Government has provided Brisbane City Council with funding to develop a business case to help reduce traffic congestion in Brisbane’s north-west.
The business case study area extends from Toowong to Bald Hills and is also considering surrounding areas including the Moreton Bay region.
In late 2019, Council invited residents to share feedback about travel behaviour and where transport services and infrastructure could be improved, to help understand transport challenges in the area.
As part of the project, a range of potential transport infrastructure ideas were developed, including:
- new and upgraded roads
- new busways and services
- new and upgraded rail lines
- a new multi-modal transport corridor, and
- local transport network improvements.
During November-December 2020, residents were invited to have their say on the transport ideas for Brisbane’s north west transport network. Feedback was collected via:
- an online survey and quick poll
- in-person community consultation sessions
- emails and phone calls.
Community feedback will play a key role in shaping what transport ideas are put forward in the final business case, prior to the Australian Government’s assessment of the business case and consideration of potential funding.

G and F asked almost 4 years agoThank you for your question regarding rail for the western suburbs.
Council is considering a range of potential transport infrastructure ideas as part of the north west transport network business case. These ideas are still being developed, investigated and refined.
In developing and refining ideas, the intent is to identify potential solutions to help address current and future congestion on the transport networks in Brisbane’s north west. As identified in the Strategic assessment – key findings document (hyperlink), Brisbane is continuing to accommodate most of the region’s employment opportunities, while there is significant population growth anticipated in Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast.
The rail ideas presented for community feedback were intended to indicate potential ways to address this regional travel demand. A rail corridor to The Gap would not assist regional travel needs identified in Stage 1 of the business case so was not included in the ideas presented to the community for feedback.
If you haven’t done so already, please register your details for future project updates.

Erna asked almost 4 years agoThank you for your question.
The north west transport network business case is still in development, and ideas are still being developed and investigated. It is too early in the process to determine the details you are seeking. As business case development progresses, options will be shortlisted and further refined and potential links to, and impacts on, existing infrastructure will be investigated.
Detailed design will not be undertaken until an option or idea is approved and funded, which is beyond the scope of this business case project.

During Stage 1 consultation, Council received more than 3400 pieces of feedback from the community, with a range of ideas for improving congestion in the north west transport network. From these suggestions, Council has developed a number of ideas and is seeking feedback specifically on the major transport infrastructure ideas presented.
If you haven’t done so already, please complete our online survey or visit us at our community consultation session this Friday 18 December at Chermside-Kedron Uniting Church (Corner Gympie Road and Rode Road, Chermside) from 2-6pm. For more information and to Have Your Say on our infrastructure ideas, please visit brisbane.qld.gov.au and search ‘north west transport network’.

The north west transport network business case is still in development and ideas are still being developed and investigated. Included in the ideas being considered during stage two is improving frequency on existing public transport routes and may form part of a suite of options to be progressed for further consideration and refinement as part of the development of the business case.
Among the major infrastructure and service ideas being presented to the community for specific feedback during the current consultation is
- Priority bus services that would create new or improved bus routes on existing north-south roads or existing east-west roads, improve coverage across Brisbane’s north-west, improve bus travel times and reliability, consider north-south roads including Beckett Road, Webster Road and Old Northern Road, and east-west roads including Hamilton Road.
- A new busway and active transport infrastructure within the North West Transport Corridor that would increase connections to employment, services and facilities, provide greater transport choice, encourage walking and cycling, link existing east-west networks with a new north-south corridor and have the potential to expand Brisbane Metro to the north-west suburbs.

BarryNR asked almost 4 years agoThank you for participating in our survey. The first question in our survey is: Which transport ideas would you like to provide feedback on? At this stage you can nominate the various ideas that you want to comment on (eg road, bus, rail, multi-modal, local transport network improvement ideas or all of the above). There are opportunities to go back throughout the survey. However, if you have completed the survey already and were only able to comment on the road ideas, you may want to consider the following options:
- Start the survey again and in the first question select “All of the above” from the menu and then proceed.
- If you cannot re-start the survey as you already have completed it on that device, try doing it from another device (e.g. mobile phone or desktop).
- If neither of these options work, please email us your feedback on brisbanetransportfuture@brisbane.qld.gov.au or call our team on 1800 318 239 and we can record your feedback.
Another option is to attend our final community consultation session this Friday 18 December at Chermside-Kedron Uniting Church (Corner Gympie Road and Rode Road, Chermside) from 2-6pm. .
We value your feedback, and we look forward to hearing from you or meeting you in person. Consultation is open until Monday 21 December.

Jacob asked almost 4 years agoThank you for your suggestion to extend Cross River Rail to Lutwyche and Gympie Roads. Cross River Rail is being delivered by the Queensland Government and is separate to the north west transport network business case. The range of ideas Council is exploring as part of the business case may have the potential to connect with existing and new transport infrastructure in the future, such as Cross River Rail.

adrian fitz asked almost 4 years agoRode road is not a gazetted B-Double route. Truck and dog and semi-trailers are sometimes mistaken for B-doubles. These heavy vehicles, up to 20m in length, are considered general access vehicles under the Heavy Vehicle National Law and have as of right access to all roads unless signed otherwise. These vehicles are required to serve construction activity, shopping centres and other facilities such as The Prince Charles Hospital that cater to the general public.

Ian Gutteridge asked almost 4 years agoThe North West Transport Network business case is still in development, and ideas are still being developed and investigated. Many of the ideas being considered during Stage 2 consultation do include new active transport infrastructure.
Further bikeway network improvements may form part of a suite of options to progressed for further consideration and refinement as part of the development of the business case.
The Bicycle Network Overlay within Brisbane City Plan 2014 sets Council’s strategic intent for the future provision of active transport infrastructure, such as pathways and on-road cycling facilities. Council is also currently completing a review of the city’s active transport network plan which will assess key bicycle corridors to identify opportunities for improving network connectivity and safety.
