Project Update #1

Council is excited to launch the first BNE Local and Liveable project in Nundah. Nundah Village is a great location for testing activation ideas because it has many positives already: low business vacancy rates, a strong main street character, a high-quality streetscape, good transport connections, and an active community network.

The BNE Local and Liveable project gives Council an opportunity to test out ideas quickly through a light-touch and inexpensive approach (called Tactical Urbanism). The approach allows the city to test out ideas in the real world, get feedback on people's actual experiences (rather than commenting on a plan), and because all project elements are temporary and/or reversible to have a bit of fun and try things that might be outside the scope of business-as-usual projects.

Tactical urbanism in South Bank, Brisbane

In many places around the world this type of experimental approach has helped communities test out ideas that eventually became permanent and develop a culture of making great places. Some of the most famous places where this approach has been used are Times Square in NYC, the riverbanks of the Seine in Paris, Thames in London, and in Brisbane - Southbank and Roma St Parklands (see image). But the approach doesn't have to be limited to high-profile locations - many neighbourhoods have benefitted over the last decade from experimenting with ways to make day-to-day life a little bit more social and fun.
