It's Spring cleaning season! Time to clean our your linen closet and attend one of our free events.

We are excited to let you know that on the weekend we held our first of three drive-through textile recycling events and we had enormous success.

Brisbane City Council is partnering with BlockTexx, a QLD based end of life textile recycling company to provide residents with the opportunity to divert their end of life linens from landfill. These valuable textiles are recycled into raw materials to be re manufactured and used in other industries such as hydro mulch at the Sydney Airport.

Unfortunately due to fast fashion a lot of our clothing and textiles are made up of synthetic fibres which makes them hard to recycle, BlockTexx have developed a new process which can separate the polyester and cotton fibres and turn them into sustainable products.

There are another two upcoming events at Karawatha on 9th September and Boondall on 21st October so don't miss this amazing opportunity to give your old threads a new life.

Council is making it easier to compost at home with a $70 rebate for eligible composting equipment, including compost bins and tumblers, worm farms and bokashi systems.

To divert food waste from landfill, composting your food waste at home is the top priority, with composting in your community as the second priority. Composting at home and in the community also encourages many other positive waste prevention behaviours such as preventing food waste(External link) from occurring in the first place, and growing your own food(External link).

Visit the compost rebate program(External link) webpage to find out more and spread the word to Brisbane residents!

What types of compost equipment do you recommend? Add your ideas below to assist other residents choose what's right for them - whether they have a backyard, live in an apartment or want to compost at their workplace.

We're hoping to re-open (and rename) the Community Composting Hub located at the Kurilpa Scout Hut on Villa St., Yeronga. The Community Gardens group, who were nominally running the site decided last year they could not support the site, and when BCC stopped supplying browns material, the hub was closed indefinitely in August.

Since then, Yeronga Community Centre (YCC) has moved into it's marvelous new site on Villa Street directly opposite the Composting Hub, and is willing to support re-opening the centre. YCC provides food support to the community and would like to see it's food and and other compositable waste processed locally for the benefit of the community, to reduce landfill, and reduce green-house gas emissions. There's also the possibility of using the Composting Hub with YCC's support to use Bokashi fermentation to process meat, dairy, and other processed food waste from the Centre. In the longer term, the Centre could also support community eductaion and faciltation to increase the take up of the bokashi process in the community.

If you'd like to get involved in this project, or would like to find out more please contact Melinda McInturff or Peter Cooper through the Community Centre on 07 3848 2285..
