Professor Susanne Schmidt is a UQ-based educator and scientist with expertise in agro-ecology and sustainable food production. She will be giving a lecture on her research investigating the power of compost. This event is available online or in-person at the State Library of Queensland. Bookings here!

  • Become a master composter

    The Master Composter is a free two-day advanced training course in composting to help you gain further skills and knowledge so that you can encourage others in your local community (e.g. retirement village, apartment complex, local school, kindy etc.) to take up composting.

    To apply for the course you must:

    • have current working knowledge of composting or worm farming, either composting at your own home or at a community garden
    • are willing and able to attend both full days of in-person training
    • are willing and able to complete 20 hours of volunteer work (within 12 months of completing the training) which promotes and assists composting in the community.

    The Master Composter course is held twice yearly. Complete this online form to submit your expression of interest for the next course.

    The first course dates for 2023 will be held on Saturday 11 March and Saturday 25 March. Attendance at both dates is essential.

  • Volunteering opportunities

    After completing the Master Composter course you will be required to complete 20 hours of volunteer work (within 12 months of completing the training) which promotes and assists composting in the community.

    Examples of volunteer work may include:

    • volunteering at a community composting hub (more information below)
    • volunteering at a school, retirement home, workplace, or community centre to help with composting
    • running compost workshops
    • providing information to the public on composting at community events (e.g. fetes, fairs).

    Community composting hubs

    Brisbane City Council has partnered with a number of community gardens around Brisbane to help residents turn food scraps into nutrients for soil.

    Every two weeks we have 2-3 people volunteer to move the compost from our collection bins into the bays. We are lucky to be co-located with a community garden and we do this as part of our working bees. We find that leaving the collected scraps any longer gets too much to handle (and very smelly), as we get 2-3 full bins each fortnight.

    Volunteer at the Environment Centres

    The community compost hub at Downfall Creek Bushland Centre(External link) in Chermside West is seeking volunteers to join the compost crew on Wednesdays and the hub at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre(External link) has their volunteer day on Thursdays. If you are interested please complete the online volunteer expression of interest form(External link)

    Volunteer at the Neighbourhood Farm

    The Neighbourhood Farm(External link) runs volunteer days on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 7am - 2pm.

    Volunteers can help with composting jobs (collecting, building, turning, sifting etc) either on those days or at other times during the week (excl. weekends). All we ask is to be notified in advance to ensure we can plan ahead.

    NB: Any volunteer activities on the farm fall under Neighbourhood Farm's insurance.
