Project Update - 07 October 2025

The Indooroopilly Bikeway project will make it easier and safer to actively travel between the Western Freeway Bikeway and The University of Queensland (UQ) in St Lucia and Indooroopilly.

In early 2025, we invited the community to tell us about the active travel experience between Carawa Street, St Lucia and Moggill Road, Indooroopilly, to help us plan this new connection.

Community feedback indicated a strong desire for separated facilities for people who are walking and riding along with better connections to the Western Freeway Bikeway and UQ.

In line with feedback from the community and our technical analysis, we're now planning for separated active transport connections on Lambert Road and Witton Road.

We know this project is important to the community and will share more information about further design development when available.

This project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government's Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.

  • What we heard from the community

    Between 3 and 30 March 2025, we received 265 completed online surveys and 432 location specific pinned comments via the online mapping activity.

    (Totals add up to more than 100% as respondents could choose more than one response for most questions)

    What matters most to the community

    The most commonly mentioned themes:

    • separated facilities for people to walk and ride
    • better connections to the Western Freeway Bikeway, UQ and Indooroopilly Riverwalk
    • improved safety for everyone with better pedestrian crossing points, slower speeds, traffic calming measures and upgraded intersections
    • safer active travel routes to local schools.


    Who we heard from (respondents were able to select multiple options):

    • 66% of respondents live in the area
    • 53% of respondents travel through the area to access other destinations
    • 30% of respondents attend an education facility in the area.


    How you travel through the study area

    When asked to nominate the top three ways respondents travel through the area, the following four were the most selected (respondents were able to select multiple options) :

    • 80% ride a bike or e-bike
    • 68% drive a car
    • 64% catch a bus or train
    • 48% walk, run or use a mobility aid.


    The most commonly selected options that would encourage respondents to use more active transport were: (respondents were able to select multiple options)

    • improved connectivity to/from the Western Freeway Bikeway or UQ (80%)
    • improved connectivity to the Indooroopilly Riverwalk (71%)
    • separated facilities for people walking and riding (67%).


    Active travel challenges

    The most commonly selected active travel challenges were (respondents were able to select multiple options) :

    • no separation between people walking, riding and driving (73%)
    • high levels of traffic (70%)
    • lack of path connectivity (64%).


    Active travel enjoyments

    The most commonly selected enjoyment options when currently using active travel were (respondents were able to select multiple options) :

    • connectivity to existing bikeways or pathway network (75%)
    • easy access to home, work or school (59%)
    • riverfront pathways (58%).


    Active travel safety

    The options most selected to active travel safety concerns were (respondents were able to select multiple options)

    • no separation (75%)
    • crashes with drivers (67%)
    • fast-moving traffic (64%)


    Driving safety

    The options most selected relating to driving concerns were (respondents were able to select multiple options) :

    • congestion (59%)
    • unsafe intersections (46%)
    • crashes with people riding a bike or e-bike (41%).


    Mapping activity insights

    We invited the community to drop a pin(s) and comment on the project focus area map in response to these questions:

    • What improvement opportunities would make your active travel experience more enjoyable?
    • What do you find challenging when active travelling through the study area?


    433 pinned comments were added from 122 contributors. A high proportion of pinned comments were clustered in two areas (or locations), Witton Road and Lambert Road. Key themes relating to suggestions/improvement ideas included:

    • dedicated, separated bikeways - strong support and suggestions for separated cycling facilities, suggestions to repurpose road space (remove parking, convert streets to one-way) to accommodate safe, dedicated cycle facilities
    • school active travel - strong desire for safe and accessible active travel routes to schools, with peak hour congestion and unsafe crossing conditions key concerns
    • traffic - suggestions for reduce speed limits, more traffic calming measures and improved safety at busy intersections.


    There were also a number of hot spots identified within the project area, these included:

    • Witton Road and Kate Street intersection
    • Western Freeway Bikeway entry point
    • John Spear Park
    • Lambert Road, between Indooroopilly SHS and St Peters Luther College
    • Lambert Road and Central Avenue intersection
    • Harts Road and Lambert Road roundabout
    • Witton Road and Bridge Street intersection.
