What were the results from consultation in late 2023?
We asked the community about their travel patterns, experiences, challenges and ideas for improvement for all transport modes along the Montague Road corridor.
More than 430 survey responses were received along with almost 900 pins added along the corridor by 160 users of the mapping activity. The results showed clear travel preferences and priorities.

What is a transport study?
A transport study is an early stage of the infrastructure planning process and helps Brisbane City Council better understand current community travel experiences, what the future looks like for Montague Road and what options we may need to consider to make sure we keep our city moving.
This study identifies strategic priorities and potential future options for who we can support the needs of people who live, work and travel along the Montague Road corridor and surrounding network.
Why is the study focussing on the Montague Road corridor?
Past consultation and technical analysis (safety, traffic) identified that while Montague Rd is a key corridor for travelling in West End and South Brisbane, it is underperforming for connectivity and safety.
On top of this, significant growth in the area has increased demand for transport along Montague Road, and this trend is expected to continue into the future.
This study is required to identify key improvements to service sustained future growth.
By investigating this major road and its supporting network, we can identify what is needed to service the community.
What transport modes are you studying?
Walking, mobility aids (e.g. wheelchairs, mobility scooters), bike or e-bike riding, e-mobility riding, buses, cars, motorbikes and trucks.
What does active travel include?
Active travel is any mode of travel that relies on human power or some physical effort. Examples include walking, cycling, e-bike, e-scooters, wheeled modes of transport (e.g. skateboards or push scooters) and wheeled mobility aids.
What is a Future Strategic Transport Network Plan?
The Future Strategic Transport Network Plan outlines Council’s long-term vision and goals for transport within the Kurilpa peninsula.
It provides a blueprint for the development of the transport network across various modes of transport, including walking, riding bikes and e-mobility devices, catching buses and using cars, motorbikes and trucks as a driver of passenger.
Looking at the network through a strategic lens helps to identify what needs to be provided and how this can be achieved within a constrained environment. A network approach considers how better utilising resources within a local area can provide the right level of service in a less impactful and more integrated system.
What are the yellow and green lines displayed on the Future Strategic Transport Network Plan?
The Future Strategic Transport Network Plan shows designated routes that are specifically designed and prioritised for people walking (yellow line) or riding a bike, e-bike or e-mobility device (green line) through the study area.
Identifying the active travel routes will support and inform the planning of active transport facilities in the network. This helps improve the area so that active travel becomes an easy choice for everyone, every day.
What is a street cross section?
The street cross sections show what Montague Road might look like if the Future Strategic Transport Network Plan was implemented. These cross sections are indicative and subject to further investigations.
Each cross section aligns with the vision and future strategic priorities by supporting sustainable transport options and improving safety for all transport modes along Montague Road.
What are the next steps after the consultation has closed?
Once the online survey closes on Sunday 15 December, we will review community feedback alongside technical inputs and finalise the transport study.
Once complete, the transport study will be published and available on Council’s website in mid-2025.
What are the next steps after the study is finalised?
The draft transport study aims to establish the strategic direction for the future of travel in the Kurilpa peninsula.
Outcomes from the final transport study would be implemented incrementally over time, as opportunities arise, for example through re-development. Future funding allocations are subject to prioritisation against other city-wide needs.
