What is a transport study?

A transport study is an early stage of the planning process for infrastructure in Council. This study will help Council to understand current and projected travel and transport on Montague Road and associated impacts to the transport network in West End and South Brisbane generally.

The purpose of this study is to better understand current travel patterns, user experiences, challenges and suggestions and develop potential options for how we can improve travel for all transport modes in the study area.

The intention of the community engagement phase is to identify issues that are important to the community and perspectives on what should be a focus of development or improvement. This will also help provide some direction on what trade-offs the community may be willing to accept in achieving a balance between improving public and active transport options in the area and meeting the needs of private and commercial motorists.

The study will also identify key themes for consideration for more in-depth investigations into potential improvements or upgrades to the network into the future.

Why is the study focussing on the Montague Road corridor?

Past consultation and technical analysis identified Montague Road as a key corridor for travelling through West End and South Brisbane. Focussing this transport study on Montague Road will identify opportunities to improve safety and connectivity along the corridor, which will benefit travel across the wider transport network.

Significant growth in the area has increased demand for transport along Montague Road. This study is required to identify key improvements to service sustained future growth.

We’re committed to keeping Brisbane moving and to do that we need to make sure our transport network is fit for purpose, starting with this key corridor.

What transport modes are you studying?

Walking, mobility devices, cycling, e-mobility devices, buses, motorbikes, cars and trucks.

What are the next steps after the study?

Community feedback from the consultation phase, as well as technical data will inform the transport study. The study will help us to better understand the challenges and opportunities for people travelling within West End and South Brisbane generally. More information, including outcomes from consultation and timeframes to complete the study will be shared with the community in mid-2024.

    What does active travel include?

Active travel is any mode of travel that relies on human power or some physical effort.  Examples include walking, cycling, e-bike/scooter, wheeled modes of transport (e.g. skateboards or push scooters) and wheeled mobility aids.
