Rogers St Compost Hub (West End)

Hi Everyone, i have been composting regularly for nearly a decade, including ramping up to provide Rogers St hub once i finished the master composting course. I use 3 'exterminator' bins and 1 rotating barrel and now have many nearby families giving me their scraps. I provide composting education with my signs, e.g. showing which veg not to put in the bins, like corn cobs, avo and mango seeds, and how much carbon to add. I tell my 'scrappers' to add twice as much carbon as their nitrogen scraps.

My question is how much carbon do you advise your scrappers add? Also, does anyone have an exterminator bin they dont need? I can do only cold composting as I'm not strong enough to mix a cubic meter hot composter. Also, I'd like to find out how new composters can easily get hold of a bench-top compost bin. Even I cant find one.

Hi Vikki,
Thanks for posting. What do you mean by exterminator bins?
When you say benchtop bin do you mean a caddy like the ones for the community compost hubs? If people register for the community compost hubs program online they can pick one up from the ward office.

Hi Vikki,  Over the last few months in the Dalek bins (exterminator?) I have been trying to make sure all new scraps are covered by the browns rather than thinking about a ratio like two to one.  When I first started watching over the bins I found people would only add a handful or so.  I make sure to have a few scoopy things in the brown bin to give them the idea that you need more than a handful.  I let goinggreenaustralia move the Daleks to one of the big bays for hot composting and still find that they could have used more browns. Maybe I'll find a bigger scoop!

I like your idea of using signs for composting education.  I have been meaning to rig up a chalk board but haven't had a chance to make one yet.  I've got a spare square black bin the one with the trap doors on 4 sides on the bottom. You could have that if it suits.  Cindy (Camp Hill)
