Consultation has now closed. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback. Council will now consider the feedback received, and provide an update to the community in early 2022.

Brisbane City Council is pleased to announce that in response to local community concerns and suggestions about motorist and pedestrian safety throughout the Fifth Avenue Precinct in Coorparoo, funding was allocated in Council’s 2021-22 budget to undertake planning, community consultation and design of traffic management throughout the precinct.

Council’s Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) team has developed some options and potential traffic management measures (see below) to discourage the use of local streets by through traffic throughout the precinct and aims to improve access, safety and connectivity for all road users.

    Advantages

    • Moderate vehicle speeds and discourage non-local traffic use when constructed at regular intervals along streets
    • Limit the loss of street parking opportunities
    • Maintain access for all types of vehicles

    Disadvantages

    • Can result in more noticeable traffic noise initially when vehicles drive over the devices
    • May result in some minor discomfort to vehicle occupants

    Considerations

    • May require upgrades to road lighting
    • Are not suitable for construction directly in front of driveways and accesses
    • May not be suitable for all locations, for example, to avoid potential impacts to street drainage
  • Slow Point

    Advantages

    • Moderate vehicle speeds and discourage non-local traffic use when constructed at regular intervals along streets
    • Can be considered as an alternative when speed platforms are unsuitable, for example, where there are regularly spaced driveways
    • May incorporate landscaping
    • Maintain access for all types of vehicles that may be expected to use the street

    Disadvantages

    • Typically result in the loss of street parking opportunities to ensure vehicle and property access is maintained at all times (e.g. for emergency services)

    Considerations

    • May require upgrades to road lighting
    • May not be suitable for all locations, for example, where a large number of motorists use the road at certain times throughout the day
  • Splitter island

    • Moderate vehicle speeds at intersections
    • Improve driving paths
    • Improve pedestrian access and safety

    Disadvantages

    • Typically require additional No Stopping conditions, resulting in the loss of street parking opportunities, to maintain vehicle access and provide improved sight lines for all road users.

    Considerations

    • May require upgrades to road lighting
    • May not be suitable for all locations, for example, at narrow intersections
