FAQs
The new Safer School Precinct program aims to improve safety and ease congestion around schools by creating precincts where sustainable travel, like walking, riding or catching the bus is safer and more convenient.
Safer School Precincts builds on Council’s award-winning programs, such as Safer Paths to School, Safe School Infrastructure and Active School Travel, to create an innovative program that combines community engagement, infrastructure improvements and behaviour change to connect places for people in our suburbs.
Currently, 66% of students in Brisbane are driven to school. This adds thousands of cars to morning and afternoon peak hours, contributing to traffic congestion issues around our suburbs. By providing more safe and convenient options to get to school, we help ease congestion for everyone, getting you home sooner and safer.
The program primarily focuses on road safety treatments which will improve safety and accessibility for people walking, riding, driving and catching the bus.
No, the Safer School Precinct program aims to benefit everyone who lives, works, studies or moves through the precinct.
Whether you walk, ride, catch a bus or drive, you’ll get to where you want to go more easily, safely and sustainably.
Our Safer School Precincts will be designed to encourage healthy lifestyles and encourage moving sustainably while getting you where you want to be sooner and safer.
Phase 1: Consult. We consult with the schools, residents and businesses in the precinct to understand your experience and what you would like to see.
Phase 2: Deliver. We use your insights and our technical expertise to create a precinct plan of treatments to improve how you move in your Safer School Precinct. We check in with the entire local community about the proposed plan to seek your support, ensuring the plan balances the needs of everyone in the community. We then start works to deliver the new and improved infrastructure in your precinct.
Phase 3: Empower. We use community insights to identify ways to empower the community and provide behaviour change programs, tools and resources to empower safe and sustainable travel choices.
Safer School Precincts focuses on a cluster of schools that are located closely to each other as improving transport in these locations will provide the community with the most benefit. When schools are closely located together, it often increases congestion during peak school drop-off and pick up times as more families are trying to access the same area at the same time. By taking a precinct wide approach to these areas, we can deliver treatments that give you more options to move and help manage congestion.
Kedron Safer School Precinct was selected due to its unique location between major arterial roads and its growing population.
